When I got there, there was ham and beans in the crock pot, and fresh cornbread on top of the stove, with a towel covering it so it wouldn't dry out too much. Dilly was in a windup swing I'd never seen before, but which looked used. I heard the door to the dryer close, and the machine turn on. Penny came into the room wearing short shorts and one of my shirts, unbuttoned, but tied in a knot at the waist. She jumped when she saw me.

"Ooo! You scared me!" she said.

"Sorry."

She looked immediately contrite. "I think I broke a rule today."
